unknown identification Flashcards
grouping of bacteria
taxonomy
Bacteria are classified by their
morphology, growth arrangement , metabolism, serology
important reference for bacterial taxonomy, where bacteria is classified due to similiarities in their rRNA
Bergey’s Manual
The presence of ____ is very important to the growth of bacteria
oxygen
requires oxygen to grow
obligate aerobic bacteria
cannot grow in presence of oxygen
obligate anaerobic bacteria
grow better if oxygen is present, but do not require oxygen to grow; most bacteria are this
facultative anaerobes
require small amount of O2 for growth
microaerophiles
do not use 02 as final electron acceptor but tolerate it well
aerotolerant microbes
why cant obligate anaerobes tolerate oxygen?
They lack catalase, which leads to the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide
Bacteria genera that lack catalase (aerotolerant anaerobes)
Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Leuconostoc, Lactobacillus, CLostridium (only obligate anaerobe of the 5)
Purpose of catalase test
identifies bacteria that can produce catalase; important for differentiation gram + bacteria (staphylococcus (produces catalase)) VS (streptococcus (does not produce catalase))
