Cultures & Culture Mediums Flashcards
Nutrient preparation where microbes are grown in lab
culture medium
Resulting microbial growth once microbes are introduced and grown in medium is a
culture
to study microbes, we need a method to grow them , known as
culturing
Culturing was a process developed by
Robert Koch and Fanny Hesse on the assist (agar)
Culture media can exist in both
solid and liquid (broth) media
How do microbes grow in broths?
Throughout the media
Solid culture media is known as
agar (material derived from algae) (not metabolized by microbes)
Microbial growth that typically happens on agar’s surface is known as
a colony (visible mass of cells derived from division of single cell)
Solid media examples inclue
Agar plate, Agar slant, Agar deep
Most culture mediums (nutrient prep needed for microbial growth) used in lab are
complex media (nutrient rich media w/ meat, peptones, veggies)
Chemically defined medias composed of
pure laboratory chemicals
As bacteria grow and divide, the broth is populated and causes
turbidity/ turbid look
Presence of turbidity (cloudiness) in liquid media displays
growth within the medium
Machine used to measure turbidity
spectrophotometer
Streak Plate Method
used for isolation/ obtaining pure culture. has less surface area
