Colony-
an area of land ruled by another country. E.g. The New England Virginia colonies in North America.
Maritime-
to do with the sea.
Colonise-
to take over land and rule it, with settlers moving there. The process is called colonisation.
Settlers-
people who move to live in another place, to start a new community somewhere.
Foreign Policy-
The fancy name given to one country’s relationship with others either through war or diplomacy.
Voyage-
a long sea journey.
Privateer-
A ship’s captain with royal permission to attack and steal from foreign ships. They are not pirates.
Plunder-
stolen goods, usually taken by violence.
‘New World’-
it used to refer to the continents of North and South America, and the Caribbean. ‘The Americas’
Circumnavigated-
to travel around something.
Indigenous-
the people who originally lived in a place. E.g. the Powhatan were Indigenous Americans.
Armada-
a huge fleet of ships to attack a country. The Spanish Armada tried to invade England in 1588.
Joint Stock Company-
a Tudor invention. A type of company where all the men of the company bought shares (stocks) which
funded their colonisation attempt or trading. Any profits made they would then get a share of.
Indenture-
Indenture-Many men had their passage (journey) to the New World paid for by the Virginia company or wealthy landowners.
In return they worked the land for seven years. If they survived they were promised land and a house
Puritans-
very strict Protestants who wanted to ‘purify’ the Church.
