Barbados became a British colony in the Caribbean in 1625.

In 1627, the first enslaved African arrived in Barbados, as the colony was
divided into large plantations.

the population were of African origin.

Slavery transformed Barbados. The Barbados Slave Code of 1661 set
different rules for black and white residents.

The enslaved resisted the plantocracy, from small acts of protest to escape to
Maroon communities. In 1816, General Bussa led a rebellion to try and claim
freedom.

Following emancipation in 1833, power remained with the white citizens.
Indentured Indians were brought over to work.

Barbados gained its independence in 1966
