Charles I
King of England from 1625 to 1649
Archbishop Laud
Archbishop from 1636. He introduced more Catholic forms of worship to the Church of England in line with the kings demands
Oliver Cromwell
leader of the new Model Army in parliament’s army. Lord Protector of England in the Commonwealth from 1653 until his death in 1658
charles II
son of Charles I forced into exile after the execution of his father. Returned as King of England and the
Commonwealth in 1660 after the death of Cromwell
Whigs and Tories
political parties formed in Parliament Whigs wanted to limit the power of Charles II and the Tories where his loyal supporters.
The Levellers
group of radical dissenters in the civil war who called for an abolition of the monarchy, social and agrarian reforms
James II
monarch that succeeded Charles II. Catholic and unpopular. Deposed in the Glorious Revolution.
the Diggers
group of radical dissenters formed in England in 1649 as an offshoot of the Levellers believing common land would be made available to the poor
Royal Society
group devoted to the study of science formed in 1660
William and Mary
The new monarchs of England from 1688 until 1702
