Who was Anna Trapnel?
- Born in 1630’s
- daughter of a shipwright
- father died, brought up y mother
- listened to many sermons
How did the war effct Anna?
- she became depressed
- considered suicide in 1642
What was her religion?
She converted to Calvinism in 1642 which is a strict Protestant who belive you whether or not you go to heaven is decided by God already.
What was going on in London during the civil war?
- not much fighting in London
- forced to loan money and taxes
- running out of coal
- if she bought coal from the King he would charge so much tax
- Schottish army captured Newcastle so they had coal again
- lots of refugees
- many newspapers (forbiden before the war)
- fortified the City of London
- Cencorship was lifted (ability to speak freely)
How did the lifted censorship law affect Anna and how did her faith develop?
- In 1646 she spoke out at an assembly of people.
- She fasted in order to be closer to God.
- This caused many visions and prophesies to be made
- one of her visions brought her to the attention of Cromwell and his army.
What happened after her mother died in 1647?
She sold all of her belongings to raise money for Parliament’s army.
After Charles was executed, what did she think about Cromwell and what did she do about it?
She never forgave him for betraying England. In 1654 she fell into a trance for 11 days and afterwards was very critical about Cromwell. She traveled the country and preached that men and women should be equal. She got arrested in Cromwell for witchcraft and was imprisoned in London. She was released later that year.
