Enslaved people-
those owned by others, forced to work without pay.
Akan
peoples living in modern day Ghana in West Africa.
Gold Coast-
Name used by Europeans for region of West Africa on the Gulf of Guinea, rich in gold.
Chattel slavery-
type of slavery where the enslaved is legal property of a slaveholder. Children automatically enslaved.
Cash crop-
crop produced to make money (e.g. sugar, tobacco).
Barbados Slave Code-
set of rules illegalizing violent punishments for any enslaved people who resisted.
Dehumanize-
to deny that someone is a fellow human.
Emancipate-
to free someone from the control of another.
Abolition-
when something is banned, removed or cancelled.
Abolitionist-
someone who wanted the slave trade abolished.
