government which has the king and queen at its head
parliament
institution which makes and passes laws
Civil war
a war between people who belong to the same country
catholic
a denomination (part)of Christianity with the Pope at its head
Protestant
a denomination of Christianity who broke away from the Catholic church and have simpler forms of worship and different beliefs
Puritan
strict Protestants often dressed in black or simple clothing who’s churches are very plain
The divine right of kings
the belief that the Monarch’s authority in power derives (comes) from God
treason
the Crime of betraying one’s country especially by tempting to kill or overthrow the monarchy or government
Restoration
refers to the action of returning something. in this case the monarchy was brought back in 1660 after the death of Oliver Cromwell
Revolution
a total change- in this case a way a country is run
Personal rule
is the 11-year period between 1629- 1640 where Charles I ruled without Parliament.
Radical
extreme or unorthodox ideas
i.e. about how the government should be run
Grand Remonstrance
a list of grievances given to Charles I by Parliament
Ship money
introduced in 1630 to raise money for Charles I. this was a mediaeval tax which was traditionally paid by costal areas in order to pay for the navy.
Scientific revolution
drastic change in scientific thought that took place in 16th-17th centuries
