Unit Nine - Astronomy - Moon Flashcards
Definition of Moon
A body that orbits a planet or asteroid as they orbit the Sun
How long is the Moon’s elliptical orbit?
Orbit the Earth - 27.3 Days
Complete Phase Cycle - 29.5 Days
Definition of Crescent Moon
The phase that is between a Half Moon and a New Moon or a New Moon and a Half Moon.
Definition of Full Moon
Phase that appears as an entire circle in the sky.
Definition of Gibbous Moon
Phase that is between a Half and Full
Definition of New Moon
Phase where no part is visible in the sky.
Definition of Waxing Moon
When the moon increases in size (or where the light appears to the right part of the moon)
Definition of Waning Moon
When moon decreases in size (or where the light appears to the left part of the moon)
What is the definition of the solar eclipse?
When the moon is in between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun.
What is the definition of a lunar eclipse?
The Moon moves into the Earth’s shadow, causing the Moon to be darkened
What phases will the moon be in an eclipse?
New Moon - Solar Eclipse
Full Moon - Lunar Eclipse
What is the Umbra?
- The cone - shaped region
- Complete shadow/darkness in an eclipse.
What is the Penumbra?
The region in which only a partial shadow/darkness in an eclipse.
What is Synchronous Rotation?
The rate of rotation is the same as the rate of revolution
Earth will always see the same side of the moon
What are the 8 Phases of the Moon?
- New Moon (Solar Eclipse)
- Waxing Crescent
- FIrst Quarter
- Waxing Gibbous
- Full Moon (Lunar Eclipse)
- Waning Gibbous
- Third Quarter
- Waning Crescent
What are High Tides (3)?
- Moon’s Gravitational Pull
- Forces Earth’s water to Bulge Out
- Towards the Moon and the Opposite Direction
When do High Tides and Low TIdes alternate?
Why?
- Every Six Hours
- Earth Rotates
What are Spring Tides
- High Tide Reaches Highest Point
- Moon and the Sun are Aligned, increasing the Gravitational Pull
What are Neap TIdes
- Moon is 90 degrees (1st & 3rd Quarter) from the Sun
- High Tide from the Moon is Overlapping with the Low Tide from the Sun
- Higher Low Tide & Lower High Tide
