Unit Five - Weathering and Erosion - Wind Flashcards
1
Q
What is Wind?
A
Air that is moving horizontally.
2
Q
How does Wind erode and deposit?
A
Wind picks up loose sediments, such as sand and silts, and carries them to a new location.
3
Q
What is Deflation?
A
- Wind blows away loose sediment
- Lowers the land surface
- Coarse sediments tend to be left behind
4
Q
What conditions can help wind erosion?
A
- Dry Climates/Deserts - Water causes cementation of particles
- No Vegetation - Roots hold soil together
5
Q
What is abrasion in terms of Wind Weathering?
A
Wind blows smaller sediment against another surface, weathering it down.
6
Q
What is a Sand Dune?
A
Depositional feature when sand is deposited in layers or mounds
7
Q
What is the Windward Side?
A
The Gentle Slope
8
Q
What is the Leeward Side?
A
The Steep Slope
9
Q
How can you tell the way a wind blows in terms of a sand dune?
A
The the wind moves towards the leeward side.
