Unit Eight - Climate - Electromagnetic Waves, Greenhouse Gases and Climate Change Flashcards
What is the Greenhouse Effect?
When greenhouse gases in the atmosphere traps infrared waves that keeps the planet warm enough to sustain life.
What causes the Greenhouse Effect?
When visible light that enters the earth transforms in infared waves.
What are the six types of Greenhouse Gasses?
- Carbon dioxide (CO2)
- Methane (CH4)
- Ozone (O3)
- Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
- Water Vapor (H2O)
- CFC’s
What four sources fuel Greenhouse Gases?
- Burning of Fossil Fuels
- Aerosols
- Animal Emissions
- Deforestation
What is the definition of climate change?
The gradual increase of Earth’s average surface temperature.
What are the three causes of Climate Change?
- Increase of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere
- Burning of fossils fuels
- Deforestation
How does deforestation affect climate change?
When trees are cut down, they are typically burned, emmisoning CO2 into the atmosphere. Also, trees tend to take in CO2, and the mass loss of trees increases CO2 in the atmosphere.
What are the three effects of climate change?
- Rising of Sea Levels
- Coral Reefs die due to Warmer Oceans
- Stronger storms
When is absorption/insolation at its strongest in land?
- Bumpy - Prevent deflection of light
- Dark - Can absorb more
Greenhouse gasses (reflects or absorbs) infrared waves
