Unit Five - Weathering and Erosion - Deposition Flashcards
1
Q
What is deposition?
A
Sediments that is dropped off.
2
Q
The sediment determines how fast they are deposited. What are the three factors?
A
- Size - Larger Sediments will deposit faster
- Shape - Rounded sediments settle faster and flatter sediments will settle slower (surface area)
- Density - More dense sediments will settle faster
3
Q
Def. of Sorted Sediment
A
Layers of sediment that are similar in size, shape or density
(Ex: Deposition from a stream)
4
Q
Def. of Unsorted Sediment
A
Layers of sediment that are mixed in size, shape, or density
(Ex: deposition from a glacier)
5
Q
Def. of Horizontal Sorting (10)
A
- Velocity
- Wind
- Water
- Other Erosional system
- Gradually decreases
SOOOO
- Size
- Roundness
- Density
- Gradually decreases
- As you move father out.
6
Q
Def. of Vertical Sorting
A
Larger/denser sediments settle to the bottom first, followed by decreasing size/density.
