Unit 8 - Cancer Biology Flashcards
What is cancer?
Malignant growth/tumor, division of abnormal cells.
What is a neoplasm?
New growth.
What does benign mean?
Non-Cancerous
What does malignant mean?
Cancerous
What does anaplasia mean?
Loss of cell differentiation.
What is pleomorphism?
Variability in size and shape
What are carcinomas?
Cancer of epithelial cells. (In situ vs invasive) Stays vs spreads.
What are sarcomas?
Cancer of muscle, bone or connective tissue.
What are adenocarcinomas?
Cancer of glandular structures.
What are lymphomas?
Cancer of the lymphatic system.
What is leukemia?
Cancer of the white blood cells.
Symptoms of Benign Tumors?
Usually small
Well defined edges
Doesn’t spread
Well differentiated cells (Cells look similiar)
Symptoms of malignant tumors?
Large Non-Defined edges (Poorly demarcated) Rapid Growing Hemorrhaging and necrosis Spreads Moves Poorly differentiated cells (All look different)
First concept for cancer biology
Cancer is a complex genetic disease, and its MICRO-ENVIROMENT is a heterogenous mixture of cells, both cancerous and benign.
Second concept for cancer biology
Cancer is a disease of cumulative GENETIC changes during aging. (Multiple genetic changes over time.)
