Unit 7 - Rheumatoid Arthritis Flashcards
Rheumatoid Arthrits
Chronic Inflammation.
Affects small joints.
Autoimmune disease.
Immune mediated inflammatory disease.
Symptoms of RA
Synovial membrane. Middle of joints (Fingers). Symmetrical
Early morning, lasts more than 45 min.
Entire body
Osteoarthritis
Bone ends rub together. No cartilage.
Affects people over 40
Which is more severe RA or OA?
RA
What is the cause of RA
Immune system attacking the body.
Age of those affected by RA
20-60
Citrullination
Arginine converted to citruline.
Progression of RA
Post transcriptional regulation
Citrulination
ACPA and RF1 attack citrulinated proteins
Antibodies usually tag around the joints.
RA Pathogenesis
Antigen presented via MHC II
Cytokines call B cells which form RF1 antibodies. This will clog up and cause pannus (hypertrophied synovium)
Fibroblasts also contribute to pannus.
Pannus
Hypertrophied Synovium.
Two antibodies fighting Citruline
Rheumatoid Factor
ACPA (Anti-citurlinated Protein Antibody)
Rheumatoid Factor
Autoantibody. Defends against self antigens.
