What is Inflammation?

Second line of defense. Activated by injury. Start point of immune system. Rapid acting. NON-SPECIFIC.

A
- Vasodilation - Increased blood flow - warmth.
- Leakage of Plasma Proteins - Edema (Swelling)
- Leukocyte recruitment - called into action.

Acute Inflammation Processes (3)
A
Mast cell degranulation - Release histamine.
Activation of plasma systems - clotting
Release of nearby cellular products.

Chronic Inflammation
A
Persistence of infection, antigen, or foreign body.

Healing by primary intention
A
24 hours - Coagulation (Platelets, Neutrophils)
3-14 days - Proliferation (Regrow cells, mitosis)
Weeks/Months - Fine tune and clean (Epithelial cells, scar formation.)
