Unit 1 - The Cell Flashcards
What is the location for Location for protein synthesis.?
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Where are the enzymes are for breaking down cellular debris?
Lysosomes
What is the powerhouse of the cell?
Mitochondria
Where does protein Synthesis actually occur in the ER? (Who does the work?)
Ribosomes
Primary Function of Nucleus?
Cell division and Control of genetic information.
Nucleolus?
Ribosome Synthesis
What is the function of histones? And what are they composed of?
Protect and package DNA. Composed of DNA and chromatin.
Chromosomes in the Nucleus
Coiled to form chromatin. (DNA and Histones)
What is the function of Plasma Membrane?
To protect, Structure, Activation (Receptors), Storage, Interaction
What makes up the plasma membrane?
Transmembrane proteins.
Peripheral Proteins.
Hydrophilic heads, Hydrophobic Tails
What are ligands?
Molecules that bind, can cause opening of membranes, adjacent openings and closing, etc.
What are the 3 Primary ways of cell contact?
1) Contact Signaling (Close signaling molecule)
2) Remote Signaling (Carrier protein with signaling molecule)
3) Contact with Gap Junction (2 Cells adjoined to one another)
What are the three types of cell membrane pumps?
1) Coupling Pump (Most common, 1 in 1 out, Sodium/Potassium/H20)
2) ATP Driven (Larger Molecules)
3) Light Driven (Plant Biology/Vitamin D)
Basics of the sodium/potassium pump?
3 Na+ go out through membrane and with ATP power (breakdown) they push to exterior and orientation of pump flips to release to exterior of cell. 2 K+ must go in cell to balance and maintain homeostasis.
