Unit 7 Notebook Terms Flashcards
What is a virus?
Particle made of proteins, nucleic acids, and sometimes lipids that can replicate only by infecting living cells.
What is a Capsid?
Protein coat surrounding a virus.
What is a Lytic Infection?
A type of infection in which a virus enters a cell, makes copy’s of itself, and causes the cell to burst.
What is a Bacteriophage?
A kind of virus that infects bacteria
What is a lysogenic infection?
A type of infection in which a virus embeds its DNA into the DNA of the host cell and it’s replicated with host cells DNA.
What is a prophage?
Bacteriophage DNA that is embedded in the bacterial host’s DNA.
What is a Retrovirus?
RNA virus that contains RNA as its genetic information.
What is a Prokaryote?
A Unicellular organism lacks a nucleus.
What is a binary fission?
Type of asexual reproduction in which an organism replicates its DNA and divides in half, producing 2 identical daughter cells.
What is an endospore?
Structure produced by prokaryotes in unfavorable conditions; a thick internal wall that encloses the DNA and a portion of cytoplasm.
What is a conjunction?
A process in which paramecia and some prokaryotes exchange genetic information.
What is a pathogen?
Disease causing agent.
What is a vaccine?
Preparation of weakened or killed pathogens used to produce immunity to a disease.
What is an antibiotic?
A group of drugs used to block the growth and reproduction of bacterial pathogens.
