Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Flashcards
1
Q
What are the ingredients needed?
A
DNA, Taq Polymerase, Primers, Thermal Cycler
2
Q
1st Step
A
Temperature raises to 95 degrees, which causes the hydrogen bonds to break so the DNA strands split
3
Q
2nd Step
A
Primers make markings on the DNA strand where it will be cut
4
Q
3rd Step
A
Taq Polymerase binds to these primer markings and starts transcribing/translating a complementary strand of RNA
5
Q
4th Step
A
This new DNA strand is split as temperature rises again, and the process repeats until a lot of strands are made
6
Q
Why does PCR happen?
A
PCR happens because we need a lot of DNA to study it well, and this process can make billions of copies of DNA
