Unit 6 - Biogenisis Flashcards
Panspermia
Concept that life may have been extraterrestrial in origin and seeded onto our earth from space
Panspermia Examples
- Tiny space rock dust is constantly falling into our atmosphere, and it contains organic compounds necessary for the formation of life
- During the bombardment, meteorites with amino acids and other organic compounds hit the earth, and the pressure they hit it compressed those amino acids into larger molecules like peptides, which are essential building blocks of life
Pasteur
His experiments refuted the idea of abiogenesis–he put a broth in a flask that no living organisms could get it, and it stayed clear for years (no bacteria formed), proving that life has to come from other life
Miller & Urey
Miller recreated primordial soup–ingredients to earth’s early atmosphere, and electrocuted them which caused amino acids to form. This could have explained how life came from those non-living ingredients, but the problem is we don’t know if the ingredients he used were true to the actual earth’s atmosphere way back when
Redi
Conducted experiments that proved life cannot come from nonliving things. When flies could not access meat, maggots would not form, proving that maggots/flies didn’t come from meat
