Unit 6 - Specication Flashcards
1
Q
Selective Pressures
A
Things in environment that affect an organism’s ability to survive, determining whether or not they will survive
2
Q
Allopatric
A
-Geographic separation where environments are different on either side
-Selective pressures are different, so differential reproduction will happen as different variations are favored in these environments, eventually bringing rise to a new species
3
Q
Peripatric
A
- Similar to Allopatric, population is split due to geographic isolation
- The individuals separated are not representative of the original population because the sample is small so there is little variation
- This leads to the founder’s effect, where these individuals with specific traits will influence how the future population will turn out. - Usually the future population will exhibit some of the same characteristics as the founders because those genes have carried over time
- Genetic drift will also happen, where the population will drift from original genes because other ones are selected due to the new environment
4
Q
Sympatric
A
- Different species are developing in the same location, not split geographically
- Happens when individuals in the population only choose specific others to reproduce with, which makes them reproductively isolated from other organisms to the point of different speciation
