Unit 7 Body Structure Flashcards
What is anatomical position?
- the body is standing upright
- feet are parallel, shoulder width apart and toes forward
- upper limbs held out at each side with the palms forward
What is the Skull in anatomical term?
Cranium

What is Lateral/Medial/Intermediate?
Lateral - the side of the body or direction toward the side of the body
Medial - the middle of the body or direction toward the middle of the body
Intermediate - between a more medial and more lateral structure
What is proximal/distal/central?
proximal - a position in a limb that is nearer to the point of attach of the trunk or the body
distal - a position in a limb that is farther from the point of attachment of the trunk or the body
central - towards the middle of the structure
What is Peripheral/Superficial/deep?
Peripheral - towards the outer edge of the structure
Superficial - closer to the surface of the body
deep - farther from the surface of the body
What is…
the Sagittal Plane?
Midsagittal plane?
Parasagittal Plane
Sagital Plane - divides body vertically into left and right
Midsigaittal - divides vertically into equal left and right
Parasagittal - runs vertically away from the middle of the body into unequal parts
What is the frontal plane? Transverse Plane?
Frontal Plane - divides body into anterior and posterior
Transverse Plane - divides body horizontally into upper and lower portions
What are the 5 main body cavities?
- Cranial
- vertebral
- thoracic
- abdominal
- pelvic
What does the Cranial and Verterbral cavity house?
The brain and the spinal cord
What does the Thoracic, Abdominal, and pelvic cavity contain?

What is the serous membrane? Parietal layer? visceral layer?
one of the thin membranes that covers the walls and organs in the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavity
lines the walls of the body cavity
covers the organs
What is the Pleura? Pericardium? Peritoneum?
serous membrane that surrounds the lungs
surrounds the heart
surrounds several organs in the abdominopelvic cavity
