What are the risk factors for developing ROP?
Birthweight less than 1500kg
<32 weeks
Oxygen
Systemic illness
Asian>white>african-americans
When is screening started?
When they reach 30 weeks
When is the peak treatment week?
36
What features are there of ROP
Popcorn fibro-vascular tissue in front of ridge
What are the stages of ROP?
- Demarcaton line
- Ridge
- Vacular proliferation on ridge
- Subtotal RD
- Total RD
What is the diff dx?
Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy - looks like ROP but birth weight and gestation are normal
Why isn’t anti-VEGF used?
Could lead to neurodevelopmental delay
May have to laser anyway
What sort of refractive error will ROP kids have?
Mypia, and likely to be 50% higher than control
Anisometropia, 6 x more likely
What is laser associated with in terms of Rx error?
Myopia
What are the advantages of using anti-VEGF in ROP?
Less myopia
What other issues will prem babies have?
Cerebral visual impairment
Perventricular leucomalacia (haems in brain - optic disc will be abnormally cupped)
Large angle kappa - Masquerades as a squint
Retinal detachments
What is plus disease?
Dilated toruous vessels on top of ROP
