Unit 6 - Part 1 Test Insurance Flashcards
Describe bitumen
sometimes known as tar or pitch. is a thick, sticky, semi-solid form of petroleum
Describe the the process of tar sands/oil sands extraction
water is heated to create steam which goes down through a pipe to the tar sand. this hot steam will melt the bitumen into a liquid which then flows up a pipe to be stored.
Name 4 petroleum end products.
bitumen used for roads, gasoline, diesel fuel, motor oil, and naptha
Describe (generally) how petroleum is refined into different end products
Crude oil is burned in a furnace and vapor passes into a column where differnt hydrocarbons are separated based on boiling points. Hydrocarbons with lower boiling points go to the top and higher boiling points go down. Different hydrocarbons are used for different products.
Describe the combustion of FFs in terms of inputs and outputs
The inputs would be oxygen and fossil fuels.
The outputs would be heat, H20, CO2
Describe the process of generating electricity from FFs. (Starting with a generic fuel source)
Any fossil fuel is burned to make water to turn to steam. Then this steam turns a turbine. The turbine powers a generate which produces electricity
Identify the type of rock (one of the major 3 types) that fossil fuels are found within
sedimentary rock
Describe the process of petroleum
Describe the process of petroleum and natural gas formation
