Unit 6- General Senses Vocab Flashcards
general senses (examples)
senses perceived b/c of receptors throughout the body that don’t rely on specific organs
ex. vibrations, temp, pressure, pain
propioceptors
sense where our body is in space (kinesthetic sense)
interoceptors (examples of what they moniter)
sense the internal state of our body and make changes accordingly
ex. hunger, thirst, temp
nociceptors
pain receptors to make us stop doing things that are harmful to us
thermoreceptors
sense the temperature of our environment
- only between 41 and 114 degrees (anything else is
pain)
mechanoreceptors
sense pressure on our body, movement, and stretching
chemoreceptors
sense the changes in chemicals in our blood
- oxygen, CO2, Ph levels
fast pain
short lasting, acute, specific pain that comes on quick and leaves quick
makes us stop whatever we are doing
slow pain
long lasting, dull pain that prevents us from continuing to injust something more
ex. you don’t want to walk on a sprained ankle because it continues to hurt when you do so
referred pain
pain felt somewhere other than its actual origin
ex. arm pain as a result of a heart attack (bc we have no pain receptors in our heart)
root hair plexus
nerve attached to our hairs that sense their movement
when our hairs stand up on end in intense situations these are able to pick up more movement
baroreceptors
sense blood pressure
tell heart to slow down or speed up accordingly
