Unit 2- Question Based Objective 2: Glands Flashcards
Exocrine Glands
What- release product onto surface of body or into body cavities. Produce sweat, oil, saliva, milk, and digestive juices
Where- Digestive tract organs, pancreas, and liver
Why- Oil keeps skin moist, sweat cools down, digestive juice breaks down food
Simple Tubular Glands
What- Glands with single tube shaped duct
Where- Large Intestine
Why- Secrete mucus to aid with digestion as it prevents food from becoming stuck
Simple Branched Tubular Glands
What- Glands that have single duct which splits into smaller tube shaped sections
Where- Stomach
Why- Make and release stomach acid to break down food
Simple Branched Alveolar Glands
What- Glands with a single duct which splits off into smaller oval shaped sections
Where- Stomach
Why- Product Mucus which protects walls of stomach from acid
Compound Alveolar Glands
What- Gland with multiple ducts that all split into smaller oval shaped sections
Where- Breasts as mammary glands
Why- Create and release milk to allow for breast feeding
Goblet Cells
What- Cup shaped cells that secrete mucin
Where- Lining organs of gastrointestinal tract and respiratory tract
Why- Mucin mixes with water to create mucus which protects
Serous Membrane
What- 2 layers of cells with fluid in between that lines body cavities and covers organs in side them. Visceral layer is the first layer which covers the organ and Parital is the second layer which lines the cavity.
Where- In abdominal and chest cavities and on their organs
Why- Prevents organs rubbing against each other and walls of cavities (prevents friction)
Mucous Membrane
What- Layer of cells which lines organs and body cavities exposed to outside particles and secrete mucus
Where- lungs, trachea, mouth, nose, eyelids, stomach
Why- mucus made protects the thing it covers from harmful particle and body fluid
Endocrine Glands
What- Structurally different glands which make and release hormones
Where- Throughout endocrine system
Why- Control large amount of body functions and systems
