Unit 2- Skin Stuff Flashcards
What are the 3 layers of our skin? (in order)
Epidermis, Dermis, and Hypodermis
Epidermis
Top layer of skin that has nothing important really in it
Dermis
Middle layer of skin which holds our blood vessels, arrector pili, sebaceous glands, and sudoriferous glands
Sebaceous Glands
Make and release sebum (oil) onto skin which keeps skin from drying out
Sudoriferous Glands
Make and release sweat onto our skin which helps us cool down
Purpose of Melanin
Make sure to talk about:
- uv light (good and bad)
- melanin (what does it do)
- vitamin d
Sebaceous vs Sudoriferous Glands
Both:
- exocrine glands
- in the dermis of skin
Sebaceous:
- produce oil
- keep skin from drying out
Sudoriferous:
- produce sweat
- help us to cool down
- different types of glands?
Erector Pili
Muscles in dermis that contract and make our hairs stand up
Adipose Tissue
Connective tissue made of mostly fat cells
- stores energy
- protects
- heat
Found in the bottom layer of skin
Hypodermis
Bottom layer of skin holding adipose connective tissue
