Unit 6- Eye Stuff Flashcards
eyebrow
serves to divert sweat and water from the eye
eyelashes
catch foreign objects (particles, bacteria, etc) to keep them from entering the eye
cones
process light waves
allow us to see color, detail, and in bright conditions
middle of retina
rods
process light waves
allow us to see in dark conditions
sides of retina (peripheral vision)
lens fibers
fibers that make up a majority of the lens
ensure that it maintains a transparent appearance
cornea
protective outer layer of eye which protects the front and helps to focus light waves as they enter
sclera
the white outer covering of the eye
provides protection and helps maintain shape of the eye
choroid
middle layer of eye wall that provides oxygen and nutrients to the eye through blood vessels
optic disc/blind spot
the optic disc is the portion of the eye where all of the axons meet from the neurons and the optic nerve begins
no photorecptors in this portion of the eye makes it a blind spot
ciliary body
structure that holds the ciliary muscles and produces the aqueous humor that fills the space between the cornea and lens
suspensory ligaments
attach to the lens and ciliary body
hold the lens in place
ciliary muscles
muscles in the ciliary body that contract to control the shape of the retina to focus on objects at varying distances
lens
structure behind the pupil that focuses light waves to ensure a clear and focused image and projects them onto the retina for processing
iris
colored muscle around the pupil that changes its size to control the amount of light coming into the eye
pupil
opening in the iris that allows light to enter the eye
