What was important and vital to a country being able to industrialize?
Capital, the resources, workforce, and means of transportation (water routes)
What limited France’s ability to spread?
Sparsely populated urban centers (not a big enough workforce) and the French Revolution/neighboring wars involving France consumed the attention and capital of French elites
What delayed Germany’s industrialization and what did they become a lead producer in?
Being separated into numerous smaller states delayed them but once they united, Germany became a lead producer in STEEL AND COAL.
What allowed the USA to be one of the leading industrial powers by 1900?
Human Capital (workforce) as a result of large amounts of immigration caused by political conflict and poverty.
What did Russia’s industrial revolution focus on
Railroads and exports however alongside it, their coal, iron, and steel industries developed, leading Russia to be the fourth largest producer of steel
Trans-Siberian Railroad
A railroad from Moscow to the Pacific Ocean that allowed Russia to trade easily with East Asian countries
First Asian country to industrialize
Japan; in their military and economy
Defensive Modernization
The process of adapting new technology, institutions, and ideas in order to protect one’s traditions and culture
How did industrialization change manufacturing in the Middle East and Asia?
It decreased as a result of colonization, the mismanagement of resources, and ineffective leadership
Company Rule (in Indian context)
When a company rules over a land as opposed to a government. Such as the British East India company controlling parts of India
Why did Indian iron/textile production decrease?
British colonization limited and sometimes completely closed mines as a result of revolts and the fear of another one while British owners of textile mills wanted their government to tax lucrative Indian mills in order to equal the market, undermining their profits. Then, even after the British rule ended, they lacked technology.
