Pain
A feeling of distress or suffering, caused by simulation of specialized nerve cells.
Pain is subjective and is personal and individual experience.
Acute Pain
Often intense, but may be mild to severe
Usually short, provides warning of potential tissue damage
Chronic Pain
Characterized as lasting longer than 6 months
Prolonged time and progressive
Nociceptive
Pain arising from somatic or visceral structures
Neuropathic
Pain associated with dysfunction of the nervous system
Referred Pain
Pain felt at a site other than where the cause is situated
Physical Dependece
A condition caused by chronic use of a tolerance forming drug
Suffering
Means the state of being is in distress, implies an external physical strain or stress.
Breakthrough Pain
Severe pain that erupts while a patient is already medication with a long acting painkiller.
Ceiling Effect
The phenomenon in which a drug reaches a maximum effect, so that the drug dosage does not increase its effectiveness.
Pain Peception
Gives pains location, intensity and one thing about its nature.
