Unit 11 Immune System/Cancer Flashcards
Benign Neoplasm
A harmless but abnormal growth or replication of cells.
Malignant Neoplasm
Uncontrolled growth of cells that can lead to death.
Cancer
A group of disease that characteristically grow in a uncontrolled manner with the spread if abnormal cells.
Carcinoma
Originates in epithelial tissues(skin and mucous membranes)
This kind of cancer makes up most of the cancer in the lungs, stomach, uterus, skin, and tongue.
Chemotherapy
The use of drugs as a treatment for cancer. These drugs are poisonous to cells that are used to decrease the number of malignant cells or reduce the size of the tumor.
Health Care Associated Infection/Nosocomial Infection
Disease, conditions or infection typically acquired in a health care facility.
Carcinoma in Situ
Is a group of abnormal cells. These cells are a form of neoplasm. “Pre-Cancer”
Metastasis
Movement of cancer cells from one part of the body to another
Tumor Suppressor Genes
Healthy, normal genes that control the growth of cells in the bod
Immunocompetence
The capability of ones immune system to deal with foreign cells
- bacterial
- viral
- malignant
Metastasis
Moving of malignant cells to another site:
1) Blood and body fluid
2) Entering a body cavity
Prognosis depends on how much the cell have attacked body tissues.
Tumor
Primary location of neoplasm
Node
Regional node
Lymphoma
Cancer in lymph tissue
Leukemia
Cancer of the body’s blood forming tissues
