Unit 4 topic 1 Flashcards
what is a lever
a machine consisting of a bar that is free to rotate around a fixed point, changing the amount of force that must be exerted to move an object
what is a load
the weight go an object that is moved or lifted by a machine or the resistance to movement that a machine must overcome
what is a class 1 lever
a lever in which the fulcrum is in between the effort and the load. and eg. would be a teeter totter
what is a class 2 lever
a lever in which the load is between the fulcrum and the effort ex. would be a bottle opener
what is a class 3 lever
a lever in which the effort is applied between the fulcrum and the load and e.g. would be a tweezer.
what is a force
a push or pill or anything that causes a change in the motion of an object
what is a Inclined plane
a ramp or a slope to reduce the needed to to lift something
what is mechanical advantage
the ratio of the force produced by a machine or system (the load) to the force applied to the machine or system (the effort force)
what is carpal tunnel syndrome
a common disorder where you feel numbing and pain in the thumb and first three fingers
what is a fulcrum
a point of a lever that does not move
what is the effort arm
in a lever the distance between the fulcrum and the effort force
what is work
the transfer of energy through motion
what is input work
work done on a machine
what is speed
the rate of motion or the rate at which an object changes its position
what is effort force
the force supplied to any machine to produce an action
