Unit 2 topic 2 Flashcards
who was Anton van Leeuwenhoek and what contributions did he add to the world of microscopes?
He was a merchant his hobby was making magnifying lenses with his great skill grinding very small lenses. With this talent, he invented the microscope
what things did Anton van Leeuwenhoek study
he studied substances such as blood, pond water, and matter
Anton van Leeuwenhoek became the first person to…
observe organisms made only by one cell.
what did Anton can Leeuwenhoek call the single cells
he called the single-celled organisms “animalcules.”
who was Robert Hooke
he looked through his microscopes he created with a thin piece of cork that he had cut from the bark of an oak tree. He saw a network of tiny compartments that reminded him of a honeycomb. he described the little boxes as cellculae this eventually led to the word cell.
what are the two important parts of the cell theory
- all living things are composed of one or more cells. - cells are the basic units of structure and function in all organisms
name all the parts of a microscope

A- eyepiece
B- coarse-adjustment knob/fine-adjustment knob
c- arm
D- revolving nose piece
E- objective lenses
f- -
G- stage
H- diaphram
I - light source
what does the eyepiece do?
It is a glass piece and is the first part of the magnification. 10 times magnification
what is the function of the body tube
Holds the eyepiece and the objective lenses at the proper working distance from each other.
what is the function of the coarse adjustment knob
moves the tube or stage up or down to bring the object to focus. Use it only with the low-power objective lens.
what is the job of the fine adjustment knob
Use with the medium- and high power magnification to bring the object into sharper focus.
what is the job of the arm
connects the tube and the base. Use this to carrying the microscope
what is the job of the revolving nose piece
it changes the power. You will hear a click to know it is ready. Rotating disk holds two or more objective lenses. Turn it to change lenses.
what is the job of the objective lenses
to magnify the object and each lens has a different power.
what is the use of the stage
supports the microscope slide. Clips hold the slide in position. A hole in the center of the stage allows the light from the light source to pass through the slide.
what is the use of the condenser lens
directs light to the object being viewed.
what is the use of the Diaphram
Use this to control the amount of light reaching the object being viewed.
what is the Job of the Light source
makes it easier to see the details.
what is the right position when holding a microscope
always hold it firmly by the arm and the base using both hands.
what should you never do when holding a lense
never touch the lenses with your fingers.
what power should the objective lens always be in
low-power
how far should the lens be from the stage?
1 cm above the stage
what is the proper way to use and care for a microscope?
- carry the microscope to your work station
- position the microscope at your work area plug in the electric cord
- use lens paper to clean the lens and the light source (mirror)
- put it low power objective lens position
- prepare the slide on the stage
- look through the eyepiece and adjust the position till its clear.
what is a wet mount
a type of sample preparation musing a microscope slide, a coverslip and water.
who first observed single-celled organisms? and what did he call them?
Anton van Leeuwenhoek he called them animalcules.
who was the first scientist to use the term “cell”
robert Hooke
