Unit 2 topic 4 Flashcards
what is the purpose of the cell membrane
it allows some substances to enter or leave the cell, and to stops other substances.
what does selective permeability mean
it only allows certain materials to cross the cell membrane.
what is permeable
lets all materials to cross it.
what is impermeable
that lets nothing through
what is diffusion?
is the spreading out process
what is an equal concentration in a cell?
its where the particle moves into and out of the cell at an equal rate
what is a greater concentration in a cell?
the particle moves out of the cell at a greater rate than they move into the cell.
what is osmosis
the diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane is called osmosis.
what is the difference between osmosis and diffusion
diffusion is the motion of spreading out in liquids, solids, and gases and osmosis is the diffusion in water.
why do plants require water
to make sugars in the process of photosynthesis.
what is the role of the plant’s tissues
to transport the nutrients
what are the vascular tissues
in plants tissues that connect the root system and the shoot system
what is the Phloem tissue
transports sugars from made in the leaves to the rest of the plant.
what its the Xylem tissue
conducts water and minerals absorbs by the root cells to every cell in the plant.
where are the xylem and phloem tissues usually along?
they are usually along teh length of the plant stems and roots.
Both the xylem tissue and the Phloem tissue are supported by other tissues that give the plant strength and the other tissues have what?
have large vacuoles for storing food and water.
When the concentration of water in the soil is greater than the concentration of water in the root cells water enters the roots by the method of?
osmosis
what are epidermal tissues
they are formed by the epidermal cell and they protect the outside of the plant.
what are the characteristics of the xylem tissue
they shaped cells and have thick walls with holes in the ends.
what are palisade cells
they are the layers of cells in the leaf that are filled with chloroplasts.
Why are many leaves typucally thin and falt?
the shape provides a large surface area to absorv sunlight. also makes it easier for gases to diffuse in the leaf cells.
what is the function of the stomata
they allow air to enter the leaf giving it oxygen to form. photosynthesis.
what is the function of the Guard cells
they expand to close off the stomata.
what is transpiration
is the loss of water from a plant through evaporation
how do trees transport water, what types of actions?
pushing and pulling
