π Unit 4: Protein Synthesis - Translation Flashcards
Translation
mRNA β-> Protein
Where does translation occur?
Cytoplasm
Codon
- Sequence of every three nucleotides in DNA or RNA
- Binds to tRNA anticodon
Anticodon
- Sequence of every three nucleotides in tRNA
- Codes for specific amino acid
- Binds to mRNA codon
What is always the first/start codon?
AUG
What is always the starting amino acid?
Methionine (Met)
Translation Process (1)
mRNA binds to small ribosomal unit
Translation Process (2)
tRNA binds to the mRNA and small ribosomal unit with Methionine
Translation Process (3)
larger ribosomal unit and second tRNA attaches to codon
Translation Process (4)
peptide bond is broken between 1st and 2nd amino acid as next codon comes in
Translation Process (5)
repeats until stop codon (UAA) is reached
What happens when translation is over?
ribosomal units detach and proteins can take on its secondary and tertiary structures.
