π©· Unit 2: Acids, Bases, pH Flashcards
Acid
dissociates in a solution, releases a hydrogen ion and anion
Strong Acid
low pH, almost completely dissociates
ex: HCl β-> (H+) + Cl-
Weak Acid
release very few H+ ions, wonβt completely dissociate
ex: H2CO3 β-> (H+) + HCO3-
Base
dissociates in a solution, releases hydroxide ion and cation
Strong Base
high pH, almost completely dissociates
ex: NaOH β-> Na+ + (OH-)
Weak Base
release very few OH- ions, wonβt completely dissociate
ex: NH3 + H2O β-> (OH-) + NH4+
What do strong acids and strong bases do together?
neutralize each other producing salt and water
What do weak acids and weak bases often act as?
buffers to maintain pH
Salt
ionic compound consisting of any cation and anion except H+ and OH-
pH Scale
measures amount of hydrogen (H+) and hydroxide (OH-) in a solution on a scale of (0-14)
pH of 7
neutral
Below pH of 7
acidic
Above pH of 7
basic/alkaline
What does it mean if the pH is low?
greater concentration of hydrogen ions
Buffer
stabilizes pH by binding or releasing H+ ions
