π©΅ Unit 1: Homeostasis/ Feedback Loops Flashcards
Homeostasis
maintaining a constant environment despite internal and external disruptions
Whatβs the importance of homeostasis in physiology?
Since every bodily function is geared toward maintaining stability, if homeostasis is disturbed it could lead to illness or death
Where does homeostasis occur?
nervous system or endorcrine system
Stress
any disturbance that causes an imbalance in homeostasis
How is homeostasis maintained?
feedback loops
Feedback Loops
keeps the body informed of any changes that may be occurring then help return it back to homeostasis
Factors of a Feedback Loop
Controlled Condition
Receptor
Control Center
Effector
Negative Feedback Loop
counteract or reverse a change bringing it back to equilibrium
(ex: shivering, blood pressure)
Positive Feedback Loop
amplifies a change, pushing the system further away from equilibrium
(ex: childbirth)
