Unit 4 - bioenergetics Flashcards
Equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water —>glucose + oxygen
Symbol equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H20 —-> C6H12O6 + 6O2
How is glucose used in plants
For respiration
Making cellulose (strengthen cell wall)
Stored as starch
Making amino acids (glucose + nitrate ions from soil)
Limiting factors for photosynthesis
Light intensity, co2 concentration, temperature
Ideal conditions for photosynthesis
Grow them in a greenhouse this helps trap the suns heat
What is respiration
Process of transferring energy from glucose which goes on in every cell
Examples why respiration is needed
To allow muscles to contract
Keep their body temp constant
What is metabolism
All chemical reactions in an organism
Equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water
Where does aerobic respiration occur
In the mitochondria
Anaerobic respiration equation
Glucose —> lactic acid + carbon dioxide
Where does anaerobic respiration occur
Cytoplasm
What is metabolic rate
Rate of chemical reactions in the body
Factors that affect a persons metabolic rate
Gender, age, BMI, genetics
2 changes someone could make to live longer
Increase exercise, reduce food intake
Why is LED light used in photosynthesis RPA
Does not release much heat
In photosynthesis RPA what should you do if you are using a normal bulb
Place beaker of water between light and tube this will absorb heat
Why is sodium carbonate used in photosynthesis RPA
Releases CO2 which is needed for photosynthesis
Problems with photosynthesis RPA
-number of bubbles may be too fast to count
-bubbles are not always sams sizs
Alternate way of doing RPA photosynthesis so you don’t have to count bubbles
Instead catches the bubbles in a measuring cylinder so you can then measure the volume of bubbles
What is glycogen
Storage form of glucose
In cells where do you find lipids
Cell membrane
What molecules make a lipid
1 glycerol molecule and 3 fatty acid molecules
What is oxygen debt
The amount of extra oxygen the body needs after exercising to deal with accumulated lactic acid
What will happen of you use normal light not LED light in photosynthesis RPA
Temperature will cause bubbles of gas to be produced faster and therefore the rate of photosynthesis would be faster
Products of anaerobic respiration in plants
Ethanol and carbon dioxide
What does metabolism include
-conversion of glucose to starch, glycogen and cellulose
-the formation of lipid molecules from a molecule of glycerol and three molecules of fatty acids
-The use of glucose and nitrate ions to form amino acids which in turn are used to synthesise proteins
-respiration
-breakdown of excess proteins to form urea for excretion
