Paper 1 RPA likely Questions Flashcards
Describe and explain what is happening at point A
-as temp increases so does the rate of reaction
-because substrate and enzyme have more kinetic energy so they move faster increasing the number of collisions
What is happening at point B
This is the optimum temperature so where the rate is fastest
What is happening at point C
As temperature increases past the optimum the rate of reaction descreases.
-this is because the active site of enzyme will change so the substrate can longer bind to the active site
-The enzyme has denatured
What is happening at point A
This is the optimum pH where the rate is fastest
What is happening at point B
-away from the optimum pH the active site will change shape
-so substrate can longer bind
-the reaction slowly then stops
-the enzyme has denatured
What is happening at point A
-As the concentration increases the rate of reaction increases
-this is because there are more substrate molecules to collide with enzymes
-so more chemical reactions occur
What is happening at point B
-As the concentration increases the rate of reaction slows down
-this is because all of enzymes active sites are full of substrate
-so no more free active sites
-so doesn’t have any difference (no effect )
-this is the limiting factor
How does light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis
As light intensity increases so does photosynthesis, because there is more light available to convert to glucose and oxygen, this is until something else like temperature becalmed the limiting factor and the rate levels off
Why does the rate of photosynthesis decrease after 35 degrees
-enzymes have become denatured
-as this is past their optimum temperature
-the active site has changed shape so substrate and active site can longer bind together
-so no chemical reaction can occur
In the osmosis practical what happens in a low concentration solution
Cells in this potato tissue will increase in mass as water moves into the cell by osmosis, this is because it is more dilute outside of the cell
In the osmosis practical what happens in high concentration solution
Cells in this potato tissue will decrease in mass as water leaves the cells by osmosis to go into the solution, as it is more concentrated sugar solution
Why do you dry the potato
To make sure only the potato mass was measured
In osmosis practical Why do we calculate the percentage change
Allows -allows us to compare the results from chips with different mass as it makes the change relative to the start mass
Control variables for osmosis practical
-time in solution
-volume of chips
-volume of sucrose solution
