- originally used to balance out political conflicts between Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia

A
- accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development
- promote regional peace and stability
- promote active collaboration and mutual assistance in economic, social, cultural, technical, scientific and administrative fields
- provide assistance to member countries in the form of training and research facilities
- effective collaboration to expand the agricultural and industrial industry, improve transportation and communication facilities and raising living standards of people
- to promote southeast Asian studies and training
- to maintain close and beneficial cooperation with existing international and regional organisations with similar aims and purposes

What are the benefits of the ASEAN?
A
- larger markets and no extra taxes
- liberalisation
- national firms can merge and become TNCs
- countries protected by foreign competitors as they are able to put tariffs, embargoes and quotas on imported goods from countries that are not in it

A
- currently have 630 million citizens and the majority are young - could become a problem in 2025
- the 10 economies are the 6th largest economy in the world - should improve to rank 5 in 2020
- regions demographic-dividend is time-limited in 2025 and needs to make a change now

- a type of intergovernmental agreement where barriers to trade (tariffs and others) are reduced or eliminated among the participating states
