diaspora

denomination
part of a branch, seperate organizations that unite a number of local congregations
ex: lutheran, methodist, and baptist are the main denominations of the protestant branch
universalizing religions
a religion that tries to appeal all humans and is open to membership by everyone
ex: christianity, islam, buddhism, sikhism
ethnic religions
a religion that is closely tied with a particular ethnic group often living in a particular place
ex: shinto, hinduism and judaism
animism
the belief that objects such as plants and stones, or natural events have discrete spirit and conscious life
ex: indigenous religions
fundamentalism
literal interpretation and strict adherence to basic principles of a religion
sect
a relatively small part of a group that has separated from an established religious denomination
ex: westboro baptist church in kansas
ethnicity
the state of belonging to a group of people who share common CULTURAL characteristics
ex: hispanic-americans, asian-americans
race
a group of human beings distinguished by physical traits, blood types, GENETIC code patterns or genetically inherited characteristics and was made to seperate groups of people
ex:asian, islander, caucasian
nationality
to identify with a group of people who share attachment and personal allegiance to a particular country
ex:american, canadian, russian
ethnic enclave
a geographic area where a particular ethnic group is spatially clustered and socially and economically distinct from the majority group
ex: chinatown or little italu
apartheid
laws that physically seperate different races into different ethnic groups into geographic areas
ex: south africa between 1950-1994
ethnic cleansing
process in which more powerful ethnic groups forcibly removes less powerful ones in order to create an ethnic homogenous region
ex: yugoslavia
genocide
deliberate extermination of a racial or cultural group
ex: killing of jews in the holocaust
balkanization
the process by which a state breaks down through conflicts among its ethnicities
ex:yugosavia
