Unit 1 Flashcards
GIS
A tool that stores, organizes, and displays geographic data( layers)
Dispersal
When objects are spread out
clustering
when objects are grouped or clumped together around a central point
Thematic map
A map that has a theme or specific purpose and focus on a relationship
reference map
illustrates unique identifiers of geographic data, places, and regions( political and physical)
peters projection
size good , shape bad
robinson projection
distorted towards the poles
mercator projection
shapes good, size bad ( used for navigation)
absolute direction
cardinal directions
relative direction
based on people perspectives (up down left right)
absolute distance
distance measured in a standard unit
relative distance
measure in money or time
projection
a way to put the earth on a 2d surface
GPS
Global positioning system ( uses satilites to send data)
space
refers to the area between two or more objects on the earths surface
absolute location
longitude and latitude coordanites
relative location
where a place is in relation to other places or features
distribution
to arrange things in a given space
situation
refers to a places location in relation to other places or its surrounding features
pattern
how things are arranged in a partial space ( factor of distribution)
density
the number of things in a specific area
concentration
the extent of features spread over a space
distance decay
the geographic principle that describes the affect of distance interactions (less distance=less interaction)
flow
the movement of people, goods, and information.
site
refers to a places absolute location as well as its physical characteristics.
time-space comppresion
a geographic principle that is relation to the friction of distance
remote sensing
a way to collect data by using a variety of geospatial technology’s
place
a location on the earth surface that is distinguished by its physical and human characteristics
sustainability
the use of the earths land and natural resources in ways that make it so they are available in the future
Enviremental determinism
A theory that argues human behavior is largely controlled by the physical envirement
possibilism
a theory that humans have the ability to adapt to the physical envirement to their needs
globalization
the expansion of economic, cultural, and political processes on a worldwide scale.
scale
refers to the area being studied
scale of analysis/data
levels of data, depending on what the scale is the scale of data could change
formal region
an area that shares one or more traits whether physical or cultural
functional region
an area organized by its function around a node/focal point
vernacular region
type of region that reflects people feeling and attitudes about a place
human environment interaction
how people affect the interact with the environment and what does the enviroment do for the people
natural resources
something found in the natural environment that is accessable and economically valuable to humans
