Fetid
(adj) having a bad smell
e. g. Many people find the smell of Limburger cheese fetid.
Fetter
(v) to bind; confine
- Fetter (n): something that restricts or restrains
- Fettered (adj): bound or confined
e.g. The poet William Blake believed that each person creates “mind-forged manacles,” fettering his or her natural instincts and spirit.
Fiat
(n) arbitrary order; authorization
e. g. The dictator rules almost entirely by fiat.
Fidelity
(n) loyalty; exact correspondence
e. g. Monks joining the Franciscan Order pledge fidelity to the ideals and rules of the Order.
Filibuster
(n) use of obstructive tactics in a legislature to block passage of a law
e. g. The senator threatened that his filibuster would include a full reading of his eight-volume autobiography.
Finesse
(v) to handle with a deceptive or evasive strategy; to use finesse, that is, refinement in performance
e. g. Engineers decided that the problem could be finessed by using lighter materials.
Fissure
(n) crevice (درز)
e. g. The geologists measure the width of the fissure regularly to monitor movement of the Earth’s plates in the area.
Flag
(v) to droop; grow weak
e. g. Noticing that the students’ attention was flagging, the professor gave them a short break.
Fledgling
(n) beginner; novice
(adj) immature; inexperienced
e.g. The coach said that some of the fledglings of the team would play in Saturday’s match.
Flora
(n) plants of a region or era
e. g. Singapore’s Botanical Gardens contain an extensive collection of the flora of Southeast Asia.
