Chasten
(v) to correct by punishment or reproof; to restrain or subdue
e. g. The child’s behavior improved after she had been chastened by punishment.
Reproof
(n) an expression of blame or disapproval (سرزنش)
e. g. She welcomed him with a mild reproof for leaving her alone.
Subdue
(v) overcome, quieten, or bring under control (a feeling or person)
e. g. She managed to subdue an instinct to applaud.
Chicanery
(n) trickery; fraud
e. g. The governor ordered audit to investigate alleged financial chicanery.
Chivalry
(n) the qualities idealized by knighthood such as bravery or gallantry toward women
Churlish
(adj) rude; boorish
e. g. It seems churlish to complain.
Circuitous
(adj) roundabout; (of a route or journey) longer than the most direct way
e. g. According to the Hindu philosophy, some souls take a circuitous path through many births to reach God.
Clairvoyant
(n) one who can predict the future; psychic
e. g. She has had a message from a clairvoyant that her son is alive and well.
Clamor
(n) noisy outcry
(v) to cry out noisily
e.g. Over the past 12 years or so the voices clamoring for better protection of the Earth’s rain forests have increased dramatically.
Clique
(n) a small, exclusive group
e. g. The principal of the high school is concerned that one clique of students is dominating the school council.
Cloister
(v) to confine; seclude
- Cloistered (adj): shut away from the world
e.g. The writer cloistered herself in a country house to finish her novel.
Coagulate
(v) thicken; congeal
e. g. In normal individuals, blood begins to coagulate about 20 seconds after a wound is sustained, thus preventing further bleeding.
Congeal
(v) solidify or coagulate, especially by cooling
e. g. The blood had congealed into blobs.
