Unit 3 - Section B: Differential Achievement - Social Class - Outside: Home + Parental Interest (Cultural) Flashcards
Douglas
Longtitudinal survey in study ‘the home and school’, found a variety of factors affected attainment (e.g. students’ health, size of family, school). The most significant factor was the degree of parent’s interest in education. MC parents were more likely to encourage attainment and progression - indicator of more frequent visits to the school to discuss child’s progress.
Feinstein
Parental interest was significant factor in educational attainment, class differences existed in terms of support. Measured parental interest by asking for teacher’s assessment/judgement of how much interest parents showed in child’s education
Criticisms of Douglas + Feinstein
WC parents will work more than one job or potentially shift work - due to the nature of working hours and lack of choice to book time off, attendance to school is not necessarily due to ‘lack of interest’.
