Unit 3 - Section A: Globalisation - Impact of digital forms of communication on Glocalisation + Cultural Defense Flashcards
Mohammadi
Points out that the image of Western media and domination is exaggerated and ignores that complex interactions that occur between cultures.
Giddens
Discusses ‘reverse colonialism’ where in fact Western cultures are not dominating less powerful groups, but the reverse is occurring, such as ‘Mexicanisation’ of California, where food, music and dress is becoming key lifestyle. This is known as ‘Glocalisation’ where local cultures assert own culture, whilst resisting Western norms and values.
Croteau and Hoynes
Argues that global digital media companies have also been forced to take into account local practices. Indigenous groups use the internet to protect their way of life - such as ‘survival international’ and ‘tribal net’ that aim to raise awareness and funds to protect their rights and land. E.g. ‘TribalNet’.
