Unit 3 Review Questions Flashcards
What is microbiology?
The study of microscopic organisms of either animal (bacteria, protozoa) or plant (fungus, mold) origin.
What are bacteria?
Single celled organisms (sing. bacterium).
What is normal flora?
Good bacteria found in the GI tract, nose, mouth, and on skin that keep us healthy.
What is a pathogen?
An organism that produces an infection or disease.
What are defense mechanisms?
Our body’s response to something foreign (white blood cells, skin, immune response) that prevents/protects from infection.
What are antibiotics?
Drugs (or chemicals) that interfere with the life process of the pathogen, making them incapable of reproducing, and sometimes, killing the organism.
Penicillins
(MOA)
Cell Wall Synthesis Inhibitors
- Beta lactam ring binds to and inhibits bacterial enzymes needed for cell wall synthesis
- Loss of the osmotic pressure, cell lysis, loss of nutrients, and cell death
