UNIT 3 2C: Proteins Flashcards
Biomacromolecule
A large biological polymer, such as a protein, a nucleic acid or a carbohydrate
Peptide Bond
A chemical bond between two amino acids
Polypeptide
A long chain of amino acids forming part of a protein
Condensation reaction
A reaction in which two molecules are joined to make a larger molecule, resulting in the loss of a smaller molecule as another product (in organisms, this is usually water)
Proteome
The complete collection of proteins within an organism at a given time
Roles of Proteome
Hormones e.g Insulin
Immunity e.g antibodies
Transport e.g Haemoglobin
Structure e.g Collagen
Movement e.g Actin
Enzymes e.g Pepsin
4 Levels of protein structure
- Sequence of amino acids
- Alpha Helix/Beta-pleated sheets/Random coils
- Single polypeptide chain
- Multiple polypeptide chains
Order Of protein synthesis in Secretory Pathway
Nucleus
Ribosome
Rough ER
Golgi
Vesicle
What is the name of the bond formed when two amino acids join together?
peptide bond
What is the component that differentiates between Amino acids
The variable group
Products of a condensation reaction
