Limbic System
helps regulate functions like memory, fear, aggression, hunger, and thirst; ring of structures at the border of the brainstem and the cerebral cortex
Hypothalamus
regulates hunger, thirst, body temperature, and the “fight-or-flight” reaction to stress and sexual behaviors; links brain, endocrine system, and emotion; controls pituitary gland; 5 F’s: fight, flight, feed, fornication, Fahrenheit
Hippocampus
processes memories for permanent storage; consolidation of memories
Amygdala
controls emotional responses, especially emotions like fear and anger (road rage); plays a role in perception of emotions and processing emotional memories
Pituitary Gland
known for the ability to release a growth hormone; involved in hormone stages during puberty; controlled by the hypothalamus; “master gland”
