Unit 2: Part 1D: Parts in the Hindbrain Flashcards
Brainstem
begins where the spinal cord swells as it enters the skull; responsible for autonomic survival functions
Medulla
controls basic life functions; base of brainstem; controls heartbeat, breathing, circulation, and swallowing; injury to this area usually leads to death
Reticular Formation
nerve network of the brainstem which controls arousal and wakefulness; modulates muscle reflexes, breathing, and pain perception; injury usually leads to coma
Pons
has a bridge of fibers that connects brainstem to cerebellum; involved in sleep and arousal, coordinating movements
Cerebellum
“little brain”; controls voluntary movements and balance; responsible for muscle memory (walking, riding a bike); injury leads to a loss in coordination
Thalamus
sensory switchboard of the brain; directs messages to correct areas of the brain; located at the top of the brain stem in the center of your brain; deals with all senses except smell
