Unit 2: Organelles (Bozeman #43) Flashcards
Role of nucleus
What do ribosomes do?
Produce proteins in the rough ER
smooth ER function
makes lipids (most of the cell is made of lipids so smooth ER is super important)
breaks down toxins
Golgi complex
transports proteins from the ER to other parts of the cell and also makes lysosomes
lysosomes
break down cell waste through digestive enzymes that come from the ER
vacuole
in plants; important in storage (excess water, for example; the pigments that give color to plants; toxins)
mitochondria
makes ATP for energy in eukaryotic cells
chloroplasts functions
- make sugar for energy in plant cells
- photosynthesis
ribosomes are made of 2 things
proteins & RNA
Protein and RNA from ribosomes are synthesized in
the nucleolus
messenger RNA (mRNA)
carries the genetic information needed to make proteins from the DNA in the nucleus to the cytoplasm where the proteins are made
where is the endoplasmic reticulum?
attached to the outside of the nucleus
the main function of the ER (smooth and rough)
it’s the place where the cell builds things
proteins in the rough ER
lipids in the smooth ER
what is the “suicide sack”?
lysosome. It has enzymes that can kill the cell where they live if the cell gets diseased
a “blister” created when the cell membrane wraps around a harmful pathogen in the cell. They will fuse with lysosomes and get destroyed.
